Quick Facts

Purpose
The University of Memphis FedEx Institute of Technology Business Plan Competition is designed to encourage students and researchers in the community to produce top business firms.

History
The rich history of business plan competitions goes back over 15 years at such universities as MIT and Rice. Historically, many participants have succeeded in launching new businesses, forming new alliances, and influencing the way entrepreneurs interact in the marketplace.

With more than 50 entries, last year's competition, our first, proved that the Mid-South is poised to be the platform for today's and tomorrow's business owners and leaders. Building off this history and the entrepreneurial success stories from the Mid-South, the University of Memphis FedEx Institute of Technology is launching its second annual competition.

Eligibility
There are no geographic restrictions for this competition. Teams must have at least one student who maintains a pivotal role in the team venture. This year we expect between 30 and 50 business plans and executive summaries to be submitted.

Entrants
Students from all regional Universities as well as students from local high schools have been invited to compete. All are invited to compete.

Range of Products and Services
The University of Memphis FedEx Institute of Technology encourages anyone with a business strategy for a marketable product or service to enter the competition.

Judging
Judging will occur in several phases. Plans are evaluated on their market potential and the team's ability to successfully present their business plan. Executive summaries will be judged by a panel of more than 20 faculty, entrepreneurs, and business professionals. Business plans finalists will be selected by entrepreneurs, venture capitalists, and other professionals involved in entrepreneurship. A blue ribbon panel comprised by distinguished business professionals from our regional community will evaluate the finalists and award prizes.
