Broadly, Dr. Azevedo's research interests concern the development of models of learning, knowledge, and performance, and determining how to use these models to improve training and instruction. The focus of his research is on the (1) nature and development of transferable cognitive skills, and effective cognitive functioning in complex real-world situations of learning and performance; and, (2) on the application of cognitive models to improve learning, performance, and assessment, particularly through the design and use of computer-based learning environments to reflect cognitive principles. His work to date has primarily been conducted in the area of medical reasoning and medical informatics, but the central issues he has dealt with relate to a wide variety of other domains.
Dr. Azevedo's recent research interests include examining the role of self-regulated learning (SRL) of complex science topics with hypermedia. Recent research focuses on the role of goals and goal-setting (e.g., learner-generated sub-goals, teacher-set, and experimenter-set goals) on students' self-regulatory behavior during learning complex domains (e.g., circulatory and environmental systems) from hypermedia and web-based simulation environments.
